My Epic Road Trip from Phoenix, AZ to Shippensburg, PA

Updated: Jul 18

I took an epic road trip to get from Phoenix, AZ, to Shippensburg, PA. The trip was all about celebrating and fulfilling my obligations related to the Cohen-Grappel Autoharp Recording Endowment. I must admit, I over-planned, over-packed, and under-practiced. And as if that wasn't enough, my car broke down on the dusty freeways of New Mexico on the way back. This led to some frustration, but I guess it also contributed to my personal growth.

The Journey Ahead

Why do I call it "epic"? For starters, it lasted three weeks. During that time, I spent a significant amount of it "car-camping." I had the chance to catch up with my family in Arkansas. Unfortunately, my jacket ended up dirty after I had to check the oil too often—burning oil is not a good sign. I really need to find a new mechanic! On the brighter side, I won an autoharp in the MLAG autoharp contest, finishing in third place!

While on the road, I had my fair share of ups and downs. I was interviewed on stage about my new album, "Autoharp Junction." However, I also faced a serious engine malfunction. To top it all off, I got a bad haircut and got ripped off at a tire shop. I also ALMOST got ripped off at the Ford dealership! Finding a classic used car for cash felt triumphant. Remember, cash is KING! And as you embark on your own journeys, remember that you are the King or Queen of your own domain.

Surprises Along the Way

On my way back, I had an international buyer for my CD! However, I discovered that shipping prices to Europe have skyrocketed.

There's just so much to catch up on here in Phoenix! First on the agenda is returning to work. Thankfully, my dog, Dandy, did a fantastic job while I was away. So there's no need for a cleaning frenzy just yet!

Furthermore, we are gearing up to start Musicians On Call at the VA in Phoenix. I'm excited about this initiative. I also have a performance scheduled for August 15 at the North Mountain Visitor Center. Instead of hiking North Mountain, why not come enjoy a cup of coffee and listen to me play the autoharp?

Reflections on the Experience

Every trip teaches you something new. Whether it's a lesson about car maintenance or simply enjoying the moments we have, these experiences shape who we are. I look back on my journey with a mix of humor and gratitude.

Not everything went smoothly, but that’s what made it memorable. The mishaps and victories are all part of the story. I'll always treasure the memories, no matter how challenging they were, because they remind me of my resilience.

As I settle back into the rhythm of life in Phoenix, I can't help but plan my next adventure. Each journey opens new doors and inspires creativity.

For anyone considering a road trip, I urge you to embrace the experience. Don’t worry about being overprepared or underprepared. Sometimes, the best moments happen when things don’t go according to plan. After all, that’s where the stories come from!

Closing Thoughts

In conclusion, life is a journey filled with surprises. Be brave and venture forth, whether by car or another means. Celebrate every moment, learn from the downs, and cherish the ups. The world is vast, and your adventures are waiting!
